Six punches, called by number

Combinations are called out loud as numbers. Learn these six and any combination can be given in a few syllables.

Jab

Lead hand, straight out. Sets your range and hides everything thrown behind it.

Cross

Rear hand, down the middle. The power comes off the back foot and through the hips.

Lead hook

Short and tight, from a fixed elbow. Teaches you to turn on your feet instead of reaching with your arm.

Rear hook

Same shape, back hand, longer path. Usually how a combination ends, and it exposes your balance.

Lead uppercut

Up the inside from underneath. A small movement that shows whether your legs are doing anything.

Rear uppercut

Rotation, not arm. Most people want it on day one and land it properly a couple of months in.

Conditioning you’ll keep doing

Rounds on the pads are interval work with something to think about. The combination being called sets the pace, your attention is on getting the shot right, and the conditioning happens underneath that. Most people find it easier to keep up than steady-state cardio.

It is also easy on the body: no repeated impact through the knees, shoulders moved through range instead of loaded, and nothing left in your legs that spoils the next day’s lifting.

How a session runs

Wraps on, then stance and feet. Rounds on the pads while Daine calls combinations and corrects your footwork, bag work to repeat what you just learned, and a conditioning finish.

Where it fits in a week

For most clients boxing is the conditioning day inside a bigger plan, alongside 1-on-1 personal training for strength. It also works on its own if the skill and the fitness are what you want. Daine will say which fits once he knows your goal.

Pads suit two people taking turns on the round, which makes it small group training at a lower rate each. If your goal is the number on the scale, the rounds help and nutrition decides it.

Common questions

Do I need any experience?

No. Most people start with no gloves-on time at all. The first sessions cover stance and footwork, and everything else builds on those.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing on day one. Daine will tell you which wraps and gloves to buy once you've had a session or two.

Is this a class?

No. It's one-on-one on the pads in Bergen County, New Jersey. If you'd rather split the hour with a partner, that's small group training, and pad work suits it.

Can I do boxing alongside lifting?

Yes, and that's how most clients use it. Boxing becomes the conditioning day in a week built around strength, and Daine programs both so the rounds don't cut into your lifting.
